Intellectual Self-Defense

…and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.’ John 8:32

Being part of the United Church of Christ, we come out of a progressive, radical, prophetic tradition. Jesus talked about people who have sight but are spiritually blind. As a progressive faith community, we foster intellectual self-defense.

The ability to think critically and independently is becoming a rare commodity in our society.  Fewer and fewer public intellectuals are willing and able to question basic cultural assumptions, biases, and conventional wisdom.  Critical thinkers are not beholden to corporate interest or the powerful; they are truth tellers, they expose lies, reveal corrupt relationships, or push the bounds of understanding. They dispel illusions, and pull the curtain back to expose hypocrisy, fraud, or false thinking.

Often found on the margins of society and the fringe of the establishment, independent thinkers are subjected to ridicule and contempt. Yet, their work is vital to humanity—we need the truth tellers.

We believe that in our fast-paced world, it is essential to dive deeper, beyond the headlines and spectacle, the illusions, or the corporate spin. At First Parish, we welcome and foster independent thought on matters of faith, politics and the world.
